Hydroseeding steep embankments

Naturalisation of Flood Remediation Earth Banks For Scour Protection & Bank Stabilisation

Hydroseeding flood defence channels

TerrAffix were asked to seed an area prior to the installation of biodegradable Rolled Erosion Control Products (RECP).
A walk over ecological survey was undertaken prior to commencement, to identify the best species mix for the site, considering soil type, soil acidity and available plant nutrients.
The mulch applied was TerrAffix Hydramulch, to provide immediate stabilisation and prevent any movement of material in the event of a bad weather event.

The main areas of focus were

  • Preventing scour
  • Low organic matter
  • Poor soil stability
  • Erosion
  • Hydroseeding over Erosion Control Blankets

There were significant benefits to the client

  • Significant carbon saving
  • Financial savings
  • Quick application
  • Rapid vegetation establishment
  • Root stability in 6 months
  • No top soil brought on site, reducing risk and cost

Site Problems

The slopes were inaccessible to vehicles, meaning we were working on extreme distances up to 200m from the hydroseeder. This required us to use multiple hose lengths to ensure good seed coverage throughout the entire site.

Work started in early winter, site conditions were wet.

Work was adjacent to a water course.

30,000 m2

We provided a single stage solution:
We started with the identification of appropriate seed to ensure biodiversity needs as well as root anchoring needs are met.
HydraMulch was blended with organic material, additives and mycorrhizae. In poor soils, mycorrhizae enable the conversion of inorganic nutrients to organic nutrients that plant roots can then access over the long-term, in association with nitrogen fixing species.
On completion of the hydroseeding, the erosion control blanket was anchored over the bank to allow vegetation to establish.
