SuDS ponds stabilisation and vegetation establishment

Reducing erosion and sedimentation during the construction of a housing estate.


The area which required stabilisation was the SuDS pond which will take runoff water from the newly built estate.
Sustainable urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) are an important water runoff management system in all new housing developments.

We were brought in to stabilise the bare soils around and within the balancing ponds at the SuDS on a housing development in Sussex.
The main objective is to minimise and trap soil from being displaced by rain impact and then transported within the surface water flow, off site and into streams and a lower lake.

The solution included:

  • Initial stabilisation, using biodegradable rolled erosion-controlled blankets, this was a combination of fully biodegradable matting and wooden pegs
  • Creation of a sump within the pond to trap sediment by building a retaining features using coir rolls and biodegradable net
  • Once the conditions allowed the bank sides were hydroseeded through and over the biodegradable nets
  • The pond ecology was established using pre-vegetated coir rolls, providing for quick growth and immediate reduction in the erosive potential of the water entering the system

Naturalisation of Flood Remediation Banks For Scour Protection & Bank Stabilisation

A solution for Hydroseeding through reinforced matting.

TerrAffix were asked to provide a solution for the vegetation of flood defence bunds and channel sides following the laying of 30,000m2 of reinforced coir blanket incorporating a double plastic net to prevent scouring.

The Erosion Control Blankets were laid to address poor soil stability on the site. The main aim of the client was to prevent scour and promote biodiversity and ecological resilience.

Further to an ecological survey we identified the most appropriate mixture of species, including, grasses and herbs appropriate for the ground conditions evident on-site.

Additions for Soil

As soils are site specific, TerrAffix Soil Solutions provide several additions that can further improve conditions for soil function and plant growth. For more complex sites we can provide bespoke solutions based on soil analysis to ensure that the best-fit solution for your site is achieved.

We provide additional products that support vegetation establishment, including fertiliser, slow-release inorganic nutrients, trace elements, inoculents and biochars:

  • Mycorrhizae – a biological addition that supports the plant to access inorganic nutrients from within the soil environment;
  • Liming agent – provides a source of calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate and micronutrients for use on sites with acidified soil;
  • Fertiliser – an organic, readily available source of NPK (8:4:2) derived from mycelial fungi;
  • Amended biochar – provides opportunities for nutrient exchange, water retention and microbiological activity;
  • Tackifier – a product for use on extreme slopes where additional temporary adhesion may be required.

The recycled eco-fibre blend of TerrAffix-HydraMulch establishes germination and promotes vegetation growth for permanent erosion control far more quickly than standard hydroseeding or Rolled Erosion Control Products.

TerrAffix-HydraMulch can reduce topsoil depth and can remove the requirement for any topsoil at all if used in conjunction with TerrAffix-Hydrasoil over a suitable substrate.


TerrAffix-HydraSoil is a hydraulically applied first stage biotic soil media system for poor steeper roadside or heavily polluted mining slopes where site access is limited.

It is a topsoil replacement system made from recycled fibres which rapidly establishes vegetation in order to prevent erosion.

TerrAffix systems also prevent pollution from mobilising in soils and therefore mitigate against wider environmental pollution.


TerrAffix-HydraBase is a hydroseeding mulch used for establishing vegetation in parks, gardens, golf courses, residential developments and other general applications on flat to gently sloping ground where good vegetation cover is required.

TerrAffix-HydraBase is a hydraulically applied mix of fibres designed to quickly establish vegetation over existing top-soil.

The mixture of fibres creates a bonded matrix: protecting seeds prior to establishment and providing a microclimate to enable rapid germination.

The natural fibres in our TerrAffix-HydraBase product will gradually degrade and become part of the soil, providing additional organic matter.


Our system specially developed for polluted mine sites is a safe and effective way of establishing vegetation cover over metalliferous mine spoil.

It reduces the bioaccumulation of metals within growing vegetation; immobilises soil pollutants; and also helps in the establishment of a protective vegetation cover, reducing pollution mobilised by erosion through rain impact and water percolation.

It is both a quick and cost-effective solution for contaminated sites where access is difficult and clay capping solutions are too expensive.


Used to provide a growing medium within roadside and other attenuation swales, promoting rapid growth of vegetation in zero soil situations.

Our Swale package reduces the mobilisation of pollutants into the vegetation, stopping them from entering watercourses.

It can be used in combination with a proprietary hydroseeding material and TerraRhizae to successfully establish vegetation and prevent soil contamination on attenuation swales where standing water is likely.


This system transforms poor and reclaimed soil, whilst preventing erosion and landslips.

The soil additive improves the vegetation on verges, benefiting soil structure and encouraging healthy plants.

It can be used in combination with a proprietary hydroseeding material to successfully provide soil treatment for reclaimed soil areas, including slopes.


Our system is specially developed for railway banks and other steep embankments with poor soils, it is an exceptional soil improver which helps rapid vegetation establishment, even on Type-1 aggregate and steep slopes, preventing erosion and improving amenity.

It can be used in combination with a proprietary hydroseeding material to successfully provide soil treatment for steep slopes such as railway embankments and road sidings.
