SuDS ponds stabilisation and vegetation establishment

Reducing erosion and sedimentation during the construction of a housing estate.

 

The area which required stabilisation was the SuDS pond which will take runoff water from the newly built estate.
Sustainable urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) are an important water runoff management system in all new housing developments.

We were brought in to stabilise the bare soils around and within the balancing ponds at the SuDS on a housing development in Sussex.
The main objective is to minimise and trap soil from being displaced by rain impact and then transported within the surface water flow, off site and into streams and a lower lake.

The solution included:

  • Initial stabilisation, using biodegradable rolled erosion-controlled blankets, this was a combination of fully biodegradable matting and wooden pegs
  • Creation of a sump within the pond to trap sediment by building a retaining features using coir rolls and biodegradable net
  • Once the conditions allowed the bank sides were hydroseeded through and over the biodegradable nets
  • The pond ecology was established using pre-vegetated coir rolls, providing for quick growth and immediate reduction in the erosive potential of the water entering the system

TerrAffix were asked to seed an area prior to the installation of biodegradable Rolled Erosion Control Products (RECP).
A walk over ecological survey was undertaken prior to commencement, to identify the best species mix for the site, considering soil type, soil acidity and available plant nutrients.
The mulch applied was TerrAffix Hydramulch, to provide immediate stabilisation and prevent any movement of material in the event of a bad weather event.

Naturalisation of Flood Remediation Banks For Scour Protection & Bank Stabilisation

A solution for Hydroseeding through reinforced matting.

TerrAffix were asked to provide a solution for the vegetation of flood defence bunds and channel sides following the laying of 30,000m2 of reinforced coir blanket incorporating a double plastic net to prevent scouring.

The Erosion Control Blankets were laid to address poor soil stability on the site. The main aim of the client was to prevent scour and promote biodiversity and ecological resilience.

Further to an ecological survey we identified the most appropriate mixture of species, including, grasses and herbs appropriate for the ground conditions evident on-site.
